Fieldfare - (Turdus pilaris)
Over Christmas and New Year, we in the United Kingdom were subjected to some of the harshest winter conditions for many years. Although the street where I live was covered with a treacherous layer of snow and ice it did not prevent me getting out on foot with the camera. One morning the sky was a glorious hue of royal blue; the light was warm and almost golden in colour. A few days previously I had noticed a group of Fieldfares (Turdus pilaris) feeding on berries growing in the hedgerows surrounding the fields close to where I live. Image of the month for February is the result of putting these elements together. I particularly like the almost defiant pose of this individual bird. Of course this defiance is somehow lost without knowing the context of the adverse wintery conditions.
